17?year old golfer Nicholas Payas has won?a silver medal whilst competing for Gibraltar at the 2015 Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. ?Nicholas is a Bayside Comprehensive pupil who works at the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens once a week, as part of his ASDAN work experience. ?The Gibraltar Botanic Gardens offer their hearty congratulations on this incredible and very well-deserved achievement.
The frame for the new Glasshouse is currently being erected, after UK-based specialist company Alitex arrived in Gibraltar to carry out the works. ?It is already looking impressive and the colour blends beautifully with Gibraltar’s limestone. ?The Glasshouse will be inaugurated in Spring 2016 to coincide with the Alameda’s bicentenary.
The Director of the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens was recently asked to deliver?a talk at the ‘Sustaining Partnerships’ conference that was held in Gibraltar by the United Kingdom Overseas Territories Conservation Forum (UKOTCF). ?Dr Keith Bensusan gave his talk on behalf of the botanic gardens and the Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society (GONHS). ?The talk was entitled ‘Promoting the Natural Environment in Small Territories: Gibraltar as a Case Study’. ?It summarised the work that is carried out by both GONHS and the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens in order to educate the public on the natural environment, including outreach initiatives and environmental programmes of activities for children.
The Really Wild Tea Party at the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park was held last week. There was?an excellent turn out, with guests flocking in for tea, cakes and refreshments, as well as a bouncy castle, face painting and feeding fun with the animals. The event was organised by Mrs Gibraltar 2015 contestant and wildlife park volunteer, Jayne Teese, who aimed to raise over ￡250 for the wildlife Park’s charity, ‘Friends of the Alameda Wildlife Park’ (FOAWP). In actual fact, the event raised over ￡430! The staff and Jayne would like to thank all those who helped out and also those who attended and donated on the day.
